How to Chose What Seminar/ Workshop/Program to Attend
Education is the highest form of Leverage
After 34 years of being a student of transformational work—and 32 years in the business—I am often asked: how do you choose what seminar to attend? What is the best education for someone that is interested in improving their life? How do you know whom to trust and know that they will teach you what you need?
With the number of seminars/workshops out there, it’s almost like asking: “What is the meaning of life?” Before answering, let me give you a little history.
I attended my first personal development training, est, created by Werner Erhard when I was 26 years old. I later met Sondra Ray, and got involved in clearing my birth trauma (amazing work for healing my “deservability” and worthiness blocks to having the life of my dreams). She introduced me to Marshall Thurber and Bobbi DePorter who created what turned out to be my life’s work.
This work first started with the Burklyn Business School; the first social entrepreneurial and experiential (and transformational) business school of its kind. I was a student at that first life-transforming event. There is still no other business school like it anywhere in the world. It later evolved into what is now called the Excellerated Business School for Entrepreneurs. The programs are taught through experiential games and processes that teach the works of great masters such as R. Buckminster Fuller (Bucky), Dr. Georgi Lozanov, W. Edwards Deming, Dr. Ilya Pregogini and many other awesome Masters.
Bucky impacted my life tremendously by his work and his words. I had the honor and privilege of literally sitting at his feet when we invited him to that first Business School. He continued to share his wisdom and knowledge with us for the next five years until his passing on July 1, 1983.
I have always loved business, and then when I started going through the process of transformation—doing educational programs that combined both—was a dream come true for me. I learned the principles so well that when the creators of this work, moved on to do other businesses, I inherited the work.
The foundation of this work is based on understanding the difference between Wealth and Money. Money is a tool that is used for exchange. Wealth refers not only to financial riches but also personal values, contributing to others, and creating artifacts, products and services that improve the quality of people’s lives and the world.
So when people ask me, what seminar should I take, you have to look at what your needs are.
Where are you in your life? Do you need more money? Are you in the process of making it, keeping it or growing it? Do your sales and/or income generating-activities need to increase? Does your business need to be created, improved or expanded? Do you have an off-line business and want to move marketing/selling your products/services on-line? Are you in a bad state of mind? Did you go through a big learning experience with the change in the economy?
I find that most people were just not prepared for the economic changes that occurred these past couple of years. The world is not going to “pot.” The world of money is not going to change as we know it—not for a while, at least. The world economies are not going to collapse tomorrow. There are several countries that are doing very well; and others that are in the process of becoming prosperous again. Getting educated on business, entrepreneurial education, is key.
Do you need to attend an Information program about your industry or one that you want to get into? Do you need a business program? A program that will teach you to be more organized and focused on income-generating activities? Do you need to do a program to heal the breakup or loss of a relationship, of a loved one? Are you in the process of healing yourself of an illness or wanting to have great health?
I remember when we first started in the 70s; there were just a few workshops around. More programs evolved and now the industry has many branches. There are programs that will teach you: Information, Business, Transformational experiences, Motivation, Healing, Relationships, Health and many more.
Another way to look at it is that so much is not taught in our traditional schools that a $100 billion a year industry has now become part of our daily lives—and growing in emerging nations. We get our education through seminars, and there are thousands of them!
No wonder people get confused on what they really need. And to add to the mix, there’s the lure of on-line business. On-line marketing is like any other marketing—you have to be a genius to master it!
Remember, business is always the same—you have to have these main areas handled: Sales/Marketing, People/Organization, Money/Finances.
It’s nearly impossible to being financially successful if you don’t have a business—systems in place to make sure that you not only sell well, but also your clients/customer receives what they are promised. Even if you inherited money, you’ll need to understand basic business principles so that your money doesn’t disappear because of ignorance. Ignorance is the sister of poverty.
Then there’s prosperity consciousness—and no matter how much you clear your blocks to having financial abundance, you must take action. The way to do that is through business. My old business partner of nine years, Robert Kiyosaki of the Rich Dad/Poor Dad Series, (along with his then business partner, Sharon Lechter & team) made famous the Cashflow Quadrant. We learned that tool from a Master in business, Keith Cunningham. The key in that Quadrant is Leverage.
If you don’t have automatic money coming into your business or through investments, you Don’t Understand Leverage! This is one of the most misunderstood terms in the wealth-creation industry. Really learn that principle. Then put it to work. You cannot just take one or two seminars and know that you got it. It’s a course of action. It’s a commitment. It’s making mistakes and correcting.
There are some masterful sales people out there—outright hypnotic. You will run to the back of the room and purchase something that you may or may not be able to afford or not really have the commitment to putting it to work.
So the question for you is: are you going to do Everything they teach you?
They teach you really good stuff. Great materials. For many of the seminar leaders, it has definitely worked. Remember, sometimes you will have to put in 18-hour days. “Sweat equity” is a prerequisite.
This is what you ask of any program that you are thinking (or wishing) to attend: How long have they been around? What kind of results have their clients or graduates achieved? If it’s a business program, will they be teaching you about long-lasting businesses that once established will definitely bring you the kind of money (and automatic too) that you want?
Before you sign on that dotted line, remember that you are the one that is responsible for your life and will have to put those principles, tools, and techniques to work. There are no magic formulas, except when you combine the power of Intention, the Laws of Manifestation, and all the awesome metaphysical Laws with sound, proven business tools and techniques. Your chances of success are then greatly improved. It won’t be a matter of luck—it will happen.
One of the key success principles in my life is to never make major decisions when I am emotional. It’s hard at times—because I am emotional! I now have the habit of waiting, of really examining what I am committing to – and ask myself: am I really going to use what I am going to learn in this seminar? Or am I going to “network” and just meet people? If so, it’s easier to go to networking events. Make sure that you are not just going with groups with the hope that this will change your life.
Having success is a combination of the Metaphysical and the knowledge of business, growing organizations, handling your affairs—especially financial—wisely.
If you are reading this wonderful publication, we know that you like and honor the Spiritual—that you will want to keep expanding your Spiritual practices, and for those workshops, you’ll have to use your own inner voice and intuition. When it comes to expanding our consciousness, it’s an energy “thing.” I have awesome Spiritual teachers, and ultimately my connection to the Great Spirit is my most important “asset.”
My commitment is to share the powerful tools that have been used by so many to have their dreams come true—may you be one of them!
