I spoke to Guru Ganesha Singh, the founder of the Snatam Kaur ensemble, on the phone from Burlington, Vermont.

He explained that audiences for the west coast tour are in for a wonderful treat with the addition of 3 new musicians to the band. Girish Gambhira (vocal, tablas, fusion percussion, guitar, harmonium) has accompanied many of the most well-known names in the yoga music genre. And Angelika Baumbach (vocal and harp) and Markus Sieber (vocal and guitar) comprise the band Mirabai Ceiba. She is from Mexico, he from Germany, and their music expresses the influences of both India and Native Latin America. Mirabai Ceiba will open the set for the first half-hour and then halfway though the second set, Snatam and Angelika will sing together. “Nobody has ever heard them perform together before, “ said Ganesha.
What is the background of the band? I understand you're the founder.
Yes, I'm the founder of Spirit Voyage Music, which I started in 2000 primarily to get Snatam's music out there. I've known her since she was a little girl, she's 35 now... But even at an early age she was singing and touching people's hearts… We call what we do co-formances, as opposed to performances, because in this genre we really inspire people to use their own voices… We have one guiding principle at our kirtans – any sound that you make is a good sound… And when you when you get 500 people singing their hearts via the sound current, it becomes a pretty moving experience.
I have to say that nearly everyone in the San Diego area seems to have at least heard of Snatam, so tell us a little bit about what's happening for you in LA.
Saturday night May 3 we're playing a concert at what may be the most successful yoga center of North America. It's called Golden Bridge. It's one block over from Sunset and Vine… and gets quite a few people from the entertainment industry. That yoga center is headed up by a woman named Gurumukh. Gurumukh loves our music, plays it all the time in the classes. It's such a lovely place, it holds such good vibrations from the minute you walk in that the atmosphere really gets you in touch with your ancient soul.
I understand you have some new musicians in the group.
We're so fortunate to have with us for the west coast tour Girish Gambhira. Girish is a great artist himself. He plays a very unique form of fusion percussion and is also excellent guitar player. When he plays he has the tablas in front of him and a full drum set around the tablas. Anybody who has heard Girish knows it's a very compelling experience. Also opening for us for the months of May and June is a group called Mirabai Ceiba. They're this lovely couple, he's from Germany, and she's from Mexico. She plays harp and they sing in several different languages. She has an intoxicating voice, an amazing range. He plays flamenco/classical guitar and has beautiful support vocal. Snatam and I have loved their music for a very long time and we feel so fortunate that they're on tour with us. So, what's in store for the Encinitas and LA audiences is that at about half way through Snatam's set we're going to invite Angelika to join Snatam. The southern California audiences are in for an amazing treat when Snatam and Angelika sing together! Nobody has ever heard them perform together. You'll definitely feel like you opened your eyes and woke up in heaven when you hear their two voices together.
Wonderful! I'm really looking forward to this concert!
